Noted director Tarun Majumdar passed away in a hospital in Kolkata. Majumdar had been ailing for the past several days. He breathed his last at the age of 92.
The nonagenarian director had been suffering from kidney ailments for a long time and was admitted to the hospital on June 14. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated late on Saturday night, and he had to be put on ventilator support. He died around 11:15 am today.
Director Tarun Majumdar, known for making films based on fascinating stories from the lives of middle-class families, died at a Kolkata hospital on Monday. Family sources gave this information.
He breathed his last at the age of 92. Majumdar has been undergoing treatment at the Government SSKM Hospital for the past few days due to age-related ailments. He was on ventilator support.
Majumdar went on to direct blockbusters such as ‘Balika Badhu’ in 1967, ‘Kuheli’ in 1971, ‘Shriman Prithviraj’ in 1973, ‘Fuleswari’ in 1974, ‘Dadar Kirti’ in 1980, ‘Bhalobasa Bhalobasa’ in 1985, and ‘Apan Amar Apan’ in 1990.
He’s the recipient of four National Awards, seven BFJA Awards, five Filmfare Awards, and an Anandalok Award. The Government of India honored him with the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri, in 1990. (ANI)
Tarun Majumdar made his debut as a director in the film industry in 1985 in Alor Pipasha opposite Basant Choudhary. Earlier, he worked under Yatrik. A group of filmmakers included Tarun Mazumdar, Dilip Mukhopadhyay, and Sachin Mukherjee. In 1963, he separated from Yatrik.

During the decades of his career, he has worked with many notable actors like Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Chhabi Vishwas, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Sandhya Roy. Tarun Majumdar has been credited with four National Film Awards for Kanchar Swargo, Invitation, Ganadevata, and Aranya Amar.
Tarun Majumdar received the Padma Shri in 1990 and has won five Filmfare Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. Talking about his films, earlier in 2015, Tarun Mazumdar had said, “I have always been fascinated by human relationships and values. I think a man’s quest is to become a better person. I believe that I better understand the middle-class environment and interpret it differently on celluloid.
Majumdar was born in British India. His father, Birendranath Majumdar, was a freedom fighter. Although a student of chemistry, young Mazumdar was fond of making films.
He formed a team named ‘Jatrik’ along with Sachin Mukherjee and Dilip Mukherjee and started directing films. Tinmurthy’s first film is ‘Chava Pava.’ The hero and heroine were Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen.’ Glass Paradise’ was produced under the direction of ‘Jatrik.’ The film won the National Award.
