Mumtaz revealed that the Kapoor family was rigorous about its ‘bahus’ not working in movies, and she wanted to act, therefore she turned down Shammi Kapoor’s proposal.
The audience was mesmerized when veteran actor Mumtaz Shaikh shook a leg with Shammi Kapoor in ‘Aajkal there mere Pyaar Ke charge. Mumtaz, who was 16 at the time, became a phenomenon and was well on her way to glory, but she was dealing with a tremendous heartbreak behind the scenes. Mumtaz had a brief romance with Shammi Kapoor during those years, but it ended when Mumtaz declined to marry him.
According to sources in a recent chat with Mumtaz, she revealed, “She loved him enormously,” she said, and he reciprocated. The AAP Ki Kasam star expressed her regret at not being able to marry him. “I was only approximately 17,” she explained. He was 18 years my senior. It was far too soon for me to marry. Kucch banna tha, mujhe. (I needed to accomplish something.)”
Mumtaz started their breakup as peaceful because they parted ways “understandably”.The Roti actor reflected on those days, saying that if she had married Shammi Kapoor at the time, “it would not have worked” since she would have “carried a regret in my heart.”
“I wanted to film. I needed to accomplish something. “The Kapoor family was adamant that their bahus not work in movies,” she explained. Mumtaz described Shammi Kapoor’s second wife Neela Devi as a “great lady, a beautiful person” when asked about her.
Mumtaz previously stated in an interview that no one believed she had declined to marry him. “Shammi Kapoor was really sweet and caring with me,” she claimed. Nobody could hardly think we were in love. Nobody thought I had turned him down for marriage since Shammi’s financial standing was better; they questioned, “How can Mumtaz deny Shammi?”
Mumtaz made her big-screen debut in Shammi Kapoor’s Brahmachari. She went on to have a long and successful career in the film industry.
