NEW DELHI: A fire broke out in a three-story commercial building near the Mundka Metro station in west Delhi on Friday afternoon, killing 27 persons, police said. After more than seven hours, the fire was brought under control, but there was still smoke rising from the floors.
When the fire broke out on the first level, it quickly spread throughout the building, engulfing over 70 individuals. Some were rescued by breaking windows and using ropes, according to police.

Twelve persons were sent to the Sanjay Gandhi hospital with injuries. Rescue efforts are currently in progress.

The first level, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sameer Sharma, housed the office of a company that makes CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi routers.

Harish Goel and Varun Goel, the owners of the first-floor shop, were later arrested, according to a Delhi Police official.

At 11 p.m., deputy commissioner of police Sameer Garg announced that 26 bodies had been found and that close to a dozen people had been rescued alive, with deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia putting the figure at 27 half an hour later. The majority of the victims were discovered on the second floor.

National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams, as well as firefighters, police, and civil defense personnel, are on the scene. Outside the building, relatives of missing employees have been asking officials if more remains have been discovered.

President Ram Nath Kovind conveyed his sadness over the horrific tragedy in the following manner:

“Due to the size of the fire, ten fire tenders were dispatched at first, and 14 more were dispatched subsequently.” During the fighting, a woman’s body was discovered inside the building. By the time firefighters arrived on the premises, three injured people had already been evacuated and sent to adjacent hospitals in CATS ambulances,” added Garg. The activities were taken up by firefighters, who also saved others.

According to police, the business facility primarily contained offices.

Officials with the fire department said 24 firefighters were on the scene trying to put out the blaze, which was contained to the third story of the structure after nearly six hours of firefighting.
