Alexis Bledel confirmed to Variety on May 27 that she is exiting the popular Hulu show, The Handmaid’s Tale, which is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s famous novel The Handmaid’s Tale. As she confirms, she says she decides to ‘step away from her role as Emily in the show. The show has been hit from the first season, and the fans will be disappointed to know that they will not see the actress again in the front, except for flashbacks and cameos.

“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time,” the 40-year-old actress said in a statement. “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily and Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”

Apart from the show Gilmore Girls, The Handmaid’s Tale was yet another notable work in the bag for Alexis as she has been nominated a total of four times in the Emmy and won one too, during the four seasons broadcasted. She is also known for 2002’s Tuck Everlasting and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants franchise.

In 2017, the actress revealed why she chose the role of Emily and why she was attracted to it. “The challenge was appealing because it is so different from the other work I’ve done,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

Giving the credit of being her inspiration to Samantha Morton’s character in Woody Allen’s The Sweet and Lowdown, she further said, “She communicated so much emotion without speaking, and it stayed with me even though I only saw the movie once. I knew how much was possible without words,” Alexis noted. Samantha played a mute woman in the 2000 film, and Alexis’ character in Handmaid’s Tale is also quiet.

Although the actress has quit the show, it is still not over for the fans as the fifth season is around the corner later this year. Based in a futuristic dystopian society ruled by fundamentalists who have old thinking about women as just the carrier of babies, the show stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Samira Wiley, and Nini Kiri, among others.

Other cast members of this show have not yet commented on Alexis’ decision, and it is still unknown whether her exit will be portrayed in the front or not.
